Amazon is the most competitive marketplace in the world, and every mistake has a price. An unoptimized page loses visibility. An uncontrolled channel lets a reseller burn through your margins. Poorly set-up advertising hands your keywords to a competitor.
To many business owners Amazon feels like a maze of shifting rules and disconnected levers. That's where a false but widespread belief comes from: "Amazon isn't for us". In reality, Amazon doesn't work when it isn't managed as a strategic channel. Here are the strategies that actually work, and the mistakes to never make.
1. Strategy comes before the first upload
Brands fail when they open an account without a plan. Before uploading a single product you need a catalog audit, a market analysis, competitor mapping and a clear definition of prices and variations. Skip this phase and you pay for it later, with months of corrections. The right roadmap runs from market mapping to continuous growth: at Novazon we follow it as a structured process, the same for every brand we manage.
2. A structured catalog (where almost everyone gets it wrong)
On Amazon you can't upload products haphazardly. Correct parent/child relationships, duplicates removed, variations organized around how customers actually browse, bundles and multipacks designed on purpose: catalog structure affects SEO relevance and conversion far more than most people think. And a tidy catalog makes advertising easier too: cleaner campaigns, more readable data.
3. Content that sells: SEO and design together
Customers judge the quality of your brand in half a second, from the image gallery. A page without professional photos and A+ content is invisible today. Use your graphics to prove the product's value: how it's used, what sets it apart, where it fits into everyday life. Above all, answer the most common objections before they become a reason not to buy.
A video, if you have one, keeps the customer on the page and completes the job. Then use A+ and A+ Premium to go beyond the initial graphics, adding something your competitors don't have. This is the heart of our Amazon Design service.
4. Advertising as an accelerator, not a crutch
Amazon Ads only work when the foundation is solid. Most companies burn budget because they start with the wrong keywords, unoptimized pages and unsegmented campaigns. Good campaigns come from weekly analysis of market, competitors and performance: impressions, CTR, conversion, ACOS and ROAS read consistently. If a KPI slips, you want to know that week, not at the end of the quarter.
5. Brand protection (the part almost everyone underestimates)
If you don't defend your brand on Amazon, you lose it. Unauthorized resellers, prices out of control, offers hijacking your listings: without oversight, margins erode in silence. The tools exist: Brand Registry, violation reporting, Amazon Transparency, reseller monitoring and consistent commercial agreements.
It's the brand protection work we did for HealthAid Italia, removing thousands of unauthorized resellers from the channel.
The mistakes to never make
- Treating Amazon as "just another e-commerce site" rather than a channel with its own rules
- Delegating management to non-specialized staff
- Not monitoring resellers and the prices on your offers
- Running ads on unoptimized pages
- Using amateur images
- Not localizing copy and keywords in foreign marketplaces
- Keeping inconsistent prices between Amazon and your own site
Each of these mistakes costs sales, margins and reputation. And you almost always pay in silence: no alert tells you where you're losing.
