Amazon FBA returnless resolutions: when to let the customer keep the product

The programme is free and covers items with an average selling price up to €75, but it only pays off on some ASINs: the unit you lose must be worth less than the costs you avoid. The rules, the sums and a calculator.

A person at their front door holds an open parcel while an orange coin flies towards them, and beside them an empty conveyor belt leads to a small warehouse

With FBA returnless resolutions the customer gets a refund and keeps the product. The programme is free, covers items with an average selling price up to €75 and runs in Italy, Germany, France, Spain and the UK. It pays off when the unit you lose is worth less than the costs you avoid: removing a standard-size product up to 1 kg costs €0.50 to €1.80, and above your category's return threshold there is a further fee that starts at €3.09 in Italy. In exchange you give up inventory reimbursement, and the return still counts towards the ASIN's return rate.

Amazon announced it in the seller forum on 27 October 2026. If you want it for the holidays, enable it now: it only covers returns created after you switch it on, and purchases made from 1 November to 25 December can generally be returned until 31 January 2027.

How it works

The programme's help page, in Italian on Amazon's Italian site, sets these rules:

Is this ASIN a good fit?

An ASIN with returns to handle

  1. Average selling price up to €75 and product not excluded?

    No

It stays out of the programme: the return comes back as usual.

    Yes
  2. Are you trying to understand a product defect?

    Yes

Keep the normal return: you need units to inspect.

    No

Is the unit you recover worth more than the cost you avoid?

Yes

Have the product sent back

High cost, or returns that often come back sellable: the normal return works in your favour. To avoid it, consider partial refunds.

No

Let the customer keep it

Low cost, returns that rarely come back sellable, or the high-return-rate fee: add the ASIN to the list.

Source for the first question: returnless resolutions, Amazon's page for selling in Italy (in Italian). The second question and the final comparison are our own criteria.

What changes in the sums

The customer refund stays the same and the referral fee follows the same rule, so only three items enter the comparison:

Thresholds vary by category and country. In Italy they are 6.82% for beauty, health and personal care, 8.82% for home and kitchen, 10.19% for sports and outdoors, 15.73% for electronics. Home and kitchen ranges from 7.14% in France and the UK to 12.86% in Germany.

Your return rate does not improve: the resolution counts towards the ASIN's average and towards the threshold, so only the cost of those units changes.

Clothing and shoes follow a different rule: the fee applies to every unit returned with free shipping and equals 50% of the fulfilment costs. The programme page also lists return processing among the savings, so the benefit may be larger in these categories. Check it against your statement on the first returns.

The sums to run, ASIN by ASIN

The selling price only tells you whether the product is eligible. The sums depend on what the product costs you and how many returns come back sellable. On one side, the value you recover: product cost times the share of sellable returns. On the other, the costs you avoid: removal on unsellable units and any fee. Three examples with a product that costs €4 and weighs 300 g, so €0.79 of removal:

Send it back or let them keep it: the sums on one return

What it costs you to put a new unit in stock.

You get this from the FBA customer returns report.

Removal or disposal, plus storage if it adds up.

Do you pay the high-return-rate fee?

Better to have it sent back

If the product comes back€3.35
If the customer keeps it€4.00
Saving per return
€0.65
Product cost below which the customer should keep it
€1.84

Rough estimate, excluding VAT. The customer refund and the referral fee are the same in both cases, so they stay out of the sums.

The maximum price filter is convenient, but it ignores these two numbers: with one limit you can lose units that would have come back sellable and still take back products that end up removed. If you have the data, a list of selected ASINs is more precise.

When to keep the normal return

Amazon says it monitors requests and restricts customers with a history of abuse, and customers do not know in advance which items offer a resolution. After you enable it, still check whether returns on those ASINs go up.

The alternative: partial refunds

With partial refunds the customer keeps the product and receives the percentage you set, chosen by return reason. Dangerous goods, hygiene products and non-returnable items are excluded. Here too the high-return-rate fee is not charged and you get no inventory reimbursement. The customer can still return the item within the return window and receive the balance, and these cases also count towards the Frequently Returned Item badge.

If you ship yourself

For merchant-fulfilled orders enrolment is separate: in Returns Settings, on the Resolutions tab, you create a rule with a price range and, if you wish, categories and return reasons. It applies to orders created from that moment on. If the item arrived damaged, defective or materially different, Amazon offers the customer a replacement with no return in place of the refund.

How to start before January

This is the picture as of 4 November 2026, based on Amazon's seller pages: fees can change, so check the ones for your product. If you want to run these sums on your catalogue, let's talk.
